Feeling Guilty About Not Spending Enough Time With Your Family?

Peter has been an independent life insurance agent since 2010. In our Zoom consultation, he asked me for help with his focus and his guilt feelings.

“I’m making a living,” he told me, “But I know I could be making more and be more mentally satisfied.”

When I asked Peter what he meant, here’s some of what he told me:

“I’ve watched all of your YouTube [TOT] interviews and read everything I can find from top agents.  I see where I am and where I need to be to get my business growing. But that gap is so huge for me that the ‘to-do’ list seems too long to even start.” …

“I feel paralyzed. I feel guilty about not working when I’m with my children and I feel guilty when I’m trying to get something done in the home office and I’m not with them. I want to make more money, but I’m not willing to work 60 hours week.”…

Here’s part of how I answered Peter:

“Peter, your belief that you need to work 60 hours a week to accelerate the growth of your business ignores the reality that top advisors don’t work anywhere near that. And your overwhelm and guilt come from two simple omissions on your part:

(1) You’re not focusing your time on the one thing you need to be doing at any moment, and

(2) You’re not scheduling your time so that your family gets your full attention when you’re with them and your business gets your full attention when you’re working.

You may have hundreds of things on your “to do” list. Which are the ones most likely to bring you more business? The others can wait. That will help with the overwhelm.

As for the guilt: How much time do you need to give your family so that when it’s work time, you don’t feel guilty. Start by blocking that time out for them in your schedule. When you’re with them, be 100% with them. And when you’re working, be 100% at work.

Since you’re working from home, make sure your family understands which time block you’re in. No more guilt–and the 100% focus will mean fewer hours floundering between the two worlds.”

If you’re feeling any of what Peter was feeling, know this: You don’t have to work 60 hours a week to accelerate your business, you don’t have to sacrifice family time or feel guilty, and you don’t have to be overwhelmed by all the things you need to do.

What you do need is to organize your business in such a way that guilt and overwhelm are all but eliminated. You can, of course, tackle this task on your own, but Peter made the decision to get the coaching he needed. I helped him set up his business in a way that allowed him to do the things that were most important and spend much more quality time with his family.

Each month, Peter was more and more excited and his production improved exponentially.
