Last week, I offered financial and insurance professionals a Webinar designed to get them off their stalled or inconsistent practice growth.
Over 50 advisors expressed interest in the webinar and 30 attended. 5 of them took me up on my offer to meet with them privately to talk about their situation.
These numbers are not unusual. Van Mueller, Top of the Table in the MDRT for 35 years, gives his audiences of hundreds his phone number and only one or two people ever call him.
But I wondered why more advisors wouldn’t jump on the opportunity for a free consultation with someone who has been helping advisors grow their business for more than 25 years.
So, I did some research and here’s what I found:
The 7 most common reasons you don’t say yes to help
1. Pride and Ego 😤
As an advisor, you’re used to being the expert. Asking for help feels like weakness. It’s embarrassing. But remember — Michael Jordan had Phil Jackson. Warren Buffett had Benjamin Graham. Seeking guidance isn’t failure. It’s wisdom.
2. Fear of Sales Pressure 😬
Even when it’s billed as “no obligation,” you’re expecting a hard pitch. And you don’t accept assurances that you won’t get one. But a genuine strategy conversation could leave you with insights. Don’t let fear block a chance at clarity.
3. Denial of the Problem 🙈
It’s easy to say, “This slump is temporary.” The truth? Plateaus rarely fix themselves quickly. The sooner you face the gap between where you are and where you want to be, the sooner you’ll close it.
4. Time Scarcity ⏳
“I don’t have time” really means, “I’m not prioritizing finding more time.” A 30-45-minute consultation could free up hours every week. Investing time in the right conversation is exactly how you get your time back.
5. Money Fears 💸
The offer of anything “Free” feels risky, and maybe you believe that you can’t afford to invest in help and are concerned about taking the time offered. But staying stuck costs so much that it should be worth the risk to have that one conversation. One new idea or one new client could be worth the time you put in. And, if you do decide to work with a coach, that work usually covers the investment many times over.
6. Skepticism About Value 🤔
Maybe you’re thinking, “I’ve heard it all before.” Yet time after time, advisors uncover blind spots and hidden challenges they never saw. That’s the power of fresh perspective.
7. Comfort in the Familiar 🛋️
Your habits feel safe — even when they’re not working. But comfort zones don’t create growth. Every breakthrough starts beyond the edge of what feels familiar.
All of these reasons are human and understandable… but expensive.
- Pride costs growth.
- Fear costs opportunity.
- Denial costs momentum.
- Time scarcity costs freedom.
- Money fears cost wealth.
- Skepticism costs insight.
- Comfort costs breakthroughs.
👉 If you see yourself in any of these, ask: What’s the real cost of staying stuck?
The advisors who grow are the ones who are willing to say “yes” to an offer of help.
