What’s your ONE Thing?

In his best-selling book, The ONE Thing, Gary Keller asks:

“What’s the ONE thing you can do, such that by doing it, everything else will be easier or unnecessary?”

This question creates a great tool for advisors who find themselves doing too many things and easily distracted.

Every day I work with advisors who are overwhelmed by the number of things they see on their plates: prospecting, processing paperwork, building client relationships, solving problems, following up, etc.

Within these areas are multiple choices.  If I’m thinking about prospecting, do I work on existing clients, networking, seminars, client appreciation events, and so on? And which do I do first?

Asking yourself the ONE thing question can make all the difference.  Maybe your one thing is a big client event.  Once you’ve established that, you can keep asking the question:

What’s the one thing I can do towards getting that event going, such that by doing it, everything else will be easier or unnecessary?”

Maybe the answer is to hiring or assigning someone to run the event.  Now you can ask, “What’s the one thing I need to do to find or choose that person, such that by doing it…”
