In one of the Facebook groups where I serve as a group expert, I keep seeing posts like this one:
“If your business isn’t growing, the only person who can help you is a top producer!”
It’s not true.
As a sales trainer, advisor success coach, and practice development consultant with 25+ years and a long list of successful clients, I can tell you: advisors who post things like this simply don’t know what resources are actually available to them.
Mentoring
Mentoring is just one of several resources. Find someone you believe is successful and ask for their help. Sometimes they’ll help for free. Sometimes they’ll charge you, or split fees — either way, you learn their strategies.
But copying a top producer rarely works as you might expect. Every year, thousands of advisors study with elite mentors, try to replicate exactly what they do — and never get close to the same results. James Clear put it best: “It’s like picking the juicy red apple off someone else’s tree, pasting it onto yours, and expecting it to grow there the same way.”
Coaching
I’ve spent 25+ years studying why one advisor thrives while another — same environment, same training — doesn’t. The answer is almost always inside, not outside. If you believe you can be, and deserve to be, successful, you probably will be. If you believe growth is a struggle, it will be.
Zig Ziglar called this “Stinkin’ Thinkin’.” We all carry fears and limiting beliefs that sabotage our results—even if we’re working with the best mentors. And we’re usually blind to them.
Transformational coaching gets into that. Once those hidden blocks are cleared, you may or may not still need a mentor — but you’ll have commitment, focus, and momentum.
A golf coach doesn’t need to outplay his pro client. He just needs to see what the client can’t: the flaw in the stance, the grip, the swing. An advisor coach is no different — he doesn’t need to out-produce you. He needs to understand your inner stance and help you correct it.
Training
Early in your career, product and process training matters. But many advisors still chase training when the real problem isn’t lack of knowledge — it’s a need for transformation. Jumping from course to course looking for “the one” that will work may be a waste of time and money.
Consulting
The way people buy — online and offline — keeps shifting. If marketing and sales aren’t your strengths, bring in someone who can help you with them.
If you’ve had some success but you’re stuck at last year’s numbers — again — don’t assume a top producer is your only option. Get help with your game, and you’ll see the shift almost immediately.
I may or may not be the right fit to help you. But I’m happy to talk it through and point you toward what will actually move the needle. Grab a time on my calendar →
In the meantime, keep REACHING…
