A long time ago…it seems like in a previous life…I was a practicing attorney with a growing practice. 

I grew my business to six figures and was proud of the accomplishment.  

But at a certain point, it stopped growing.  Everything I did to get it there in the first place—providing outstanding service with great client communication, networking everywhere, creating referral partnerships with accountants, working 60-hour weeks to get on top of things—all seemed to get me to pretty much the same place at the end of each year.

It always seemed like the choice was: hire even more help than I already had and take home less so that I could get more of the important work done…or just get out of the profession.  

I chose to try to stay on top of it, but the stress of continuing that marathon put me in the hospital and, ultimately, left me disabled for a year.  Then I decided to get out. 

What I didn’t know at the time was that there was a strategy that would have broken the logjam for me.  It would have involved four simple changes:

(1) Leveraging and managing my relationships with existing clients and my network,

(2) Focusing on one niche with one clearly developed service,

(3) Being clear on my “Why” so that I could quickly tell whether a prospective client was right for my business, and

(4) Creating and implementing a marketing plan that focused on my niche and what was already working
